Or "A Place for Eric to gripe about the stupid choices the Academy makes)
There have been both scenarios where the winner was a total head-scratcher, (Around the World in Eighty Days) or where a good movie beat what I consider a better movie (Forrest Gump, Chariots of Fire, etc) So here are what I feel are some examples:
1933: Cavalcade - Again, haven't seen it, but
- What should have won was "King Kong"
1938: "You Can't Take It With You" I LOVE love love, this film, to death. It's such a cute story, has a great message, and all of Capra's regulars give excellent performances, but I have to say I think that "Bringing Up Baby" might be a better film. I dunno though, they're close
1941: "How Green Was My Valley" - a fine film, but it's overshadowed by cinematic masterpieces like "The Maltese Falcon", and "Citizen Kane." Although the latter probably had no chance of winning, because when it came out, it and its creator, Orson Welles, weren't very popular or liked.
1955: "Marty" - A really good movie. How "Rebel Without a Cause" wasn't even nominated, I'll never know
1956: "Around the World in Eighty Days" - Haven't seen it, but from what I know, it seems like a safe choice for the Academy, over both "Giant" (which is amazing) and "The Ten Commandments" (which I hear is great)
1964: "My Fair Lady "- An absolutely wonderful musical, and a great movie, but I think Doctor Strangelove may be a bit better
1968: "Oliver!" - 1968 was an amazing year for film, and THAT's what took home the gold? Really? How bout something like "Planet of the Apes", or freakin' "2001: A Space Odessey"
1969: "Midnight Cowboy" - ehhh wasn't too impressed with this one. Would have rather had "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" win.
1977: Annie Hall - This is a personal gripe, and a debate I get in with others a lot, but I maintain that "Star Wars" is a better film & should have won, but that being said, I really do love "Annie Hall" so this one doesn't bother me as much
1981: "Chariots of Fire" - Really good movie, well-acted, and I really thought the story was inspirational; that being said, "Raiders of the Lost Ark" is a better film and probably should have won
1990: "Dances With Wolves" - An alright movie, but "Goodfellas" (also nominated that year) was a much better film & would have been a better choice
1994: "Forrest Gump"
- What should have won: The Shawshank Redemption, or Pulp Fiction.
I really do like "Forrest Gump", and 1994 was really a fantastic year, but I can't help
1995: "Braveheart" - Another great year. Not to take anything away from Braveheart (because I haven't seen it yet) but two movies (that weren't even nominated) probably should have won. Those being "Seven", and "The Usual Suspects". Hell, I would have probably been happier with "Babe" (which was actually nominated that year) or "Toy Story" which wasn't
1996: "The English Patient" - Haven't seen it, but i can't imagine it's better than:
- What should have won: Fargo
2005: Crash
- Anything else that was up that year ("Good Night and Good Luck", "Brokeback Mountain", "Capote", "Munich")
I think that's good for now. Anyone else have input for what they think SHOULDN'T have won "Best Picture"?
